An award-winning, state-of-the-art, LEED® Platinum Walking Mountains Science Center is a natural science school and museum. The campus has three (3) buildings that utilize renewable energy in the form of Vertical Geothermal Ground Source Heat Pumps, Solar Thermal arrays, and a 34 kW Solar PV system. The building’s design also takes full advantage of solar gain for heating and natural air movement for cooling. The building envelope of these buildings was specifically designed and built to control thermal bridging and unwanted air infiltration. Utilizing double wall construction, thermal decoupling, insulation systems, and exterior air barrier detailing, the team accomplished an average R-45 insulation value in the walls. Other unique features included waterless urinals, straw bale insulation, and a green roof assembly.
